A Distressed Dental Crown Needs a Dentist’s Attention

Posted .

Our dentists, Dr. Sage White and Dr. Trevor White, may use a dental crown to cosmetically restore a tooth or treat a tooth that has been affected by a large cavity or dental fracture. Dental crowns can also be used to protect a tooth that has had a root canal.

Crowns are made from materials like dental grade porcelain, gold or metal alloys to effectively replicate a tooth’s enamel layer. They are then bonded to the dentin of the tooth with a strong dental adhesive.  Unfortunately, there are instances in which a patient has suffered an accidental blow to the mouth which weakened the bond between the dental crown and the tooth. This can cause a loose feeling with the dental crown or discomfort when biting and chewing. If you have been experiencing a problem with a dental crown, you need to have it examined by our dentist as soon as possible. The longer you put off seeing a dental professional, the more likely you are to experience significant complications.

While you wait for your appointment, you need to resist the temptation to wiggle or play with the loose crown. You shouldn’t attempt to clean a loose crown. Even a modest amount of manipulation could potentially to cause damage to your tooth. Any required cleaning measures will be handled by our dentist and the Gentle Family Dentistry & Orthodontics staff.

If the tooth itself hasn’t been damaged, our dentist might be able to cement the dental crown back in place or start the process of fitting you for a new dental crown. If the tooth has been compromised, our dentist might need to perform a root canal to restore the structure of the anchoring abutment.

If you are in the Cedar City, Utah, area and you have loose or otherwise distressed dental crown, you should call 435-586-9991 to schedule an appointment at Gentle Family Dentistry & Orthodontics.
