What is Sedation Dentistry?

Posted .

For some people, a trip to the dentist can cause low level anxiety. Others may suffer from a dental phobia. Such feelings are not uncommon, but they should not keep you from your routine appointments, or having a problem treated. In cases of dental anxiety or fear, you should take the time to talk with the dentist and their staff about your concerns. Sedation dentistry can be used to put you at ease during your appointment, and sedation may be needed for a particular procedure, such as the removal of a wisdom tooth.

Your dentist may prescribe a medication that comes in a pill or a liquid that you will take prior to your procedure. It may be administered in the office, or you may take it before coming in to give it time to take effect. You will still be awake during your procedure but you will be relaxed.

With intravenous sedation, a sedative is injected into your bloodstream. Intravenous sedation will leave you in a deeper state of sedation, but you will not be completely unconscious. However, you will need someone to take you home after your procedure, and you will need some recovery time.

General anesthesia is also administered intravenously. You will be asleep throughout the procedure. A general anesthetic requires a recovery time in the office after your procedure, and you may need to spend some time at home recovering as well.

Nitrous oxide, which is also known as laughing gas has been used in many dental practices for years. For many dentists, it is the preferred method of sedation for children. Nitrous oxide is mixed with oxygen and is administered through a mask that has been placed over the nose. You will be relaxed, but not unconscious and you will be able to communicate with the dentist if need be. The gas wears off within minutes after it has been removed and there are no lasting effects
